These methods are economical, use materials we already have at home, and keep plants alive when we go on vacation.
House Plant Care 101: Water
There are three tried and true methods that I personally use for watering plants while on vacation. These three methods are very simple and can be used to water indoor and outdoor plants.
It is an automatic watering system for potted plants. This is a simple method you can use by grabbing any fabric you have lying around. I used old t-shirts and they work well, but if you want something a little prettier you can use handmade fabric like I did.
This DIY water-wicking setup works by sucking water from a jar onto fabric and onto dry soil. Add water to the soil and keep plants hydrated.
Plant self-watering tip: If the braid is exposed to hot, direct sunlight, it will dry out before the water reaches the plant. Therefore, it’s best to keep the containers in a partially sunny location while you’re away so they get enough sun, but not too much. It also helps keep them moist so they don’t need as much water.
How Often And How Much You Should Water Houseplants
It is ideal for in-ground or elevated gardens, but can also be used for container gardens. Clear plastic water bottles or soda bottles work wonders as a DIY drip system.
DIY Plant Watering Tip: You can cover the top of the bottled water to prevent evaporation or mosquitoes. I used plastic wrap, a clear plastic bag or the end I cut off, upside down and pressed with rocks.
These watering cans are great for any garden. As the bottle is made of glass and not plastic, the water only comes out when air enters. This means that if the floor is full of water, little or nothing will come out of the bottle. This is a great way to ensure your plants receive the right amount of water.
Another option for your container plants is to move them to a shady location. A little indirect sunlight for a week won’t hurt them and will keep them from drying out too much. Mulch helps retain water and keeps weeds at bay. Just be sure to use vegetable garden-friendly mulch. I like leaf compost or grass clippings because they are free, easy to find, and can add nutrients to the soil.
