Snow-capped peaks nurture Lake Louise. I was shivering in my thin coat and looked down at Charlie’s thick coat. My traveling companion had never seen a mountain before.

We arrived in Banff, Alta., the last stop on a nine-day journey westward that took us through five provinces from Toronto to Vancouver, partly for my husband’s job and partly to live in the Big Apple. in nature. More than just a novel. I hope Charlie was as fascinated by the Canadian Rockies and glacial lakes as we stopped for him, driving over 4,700 kilometers to our new home.

For someone with a basic knowledge of aerodynamics, flying can be a scary thing. Charlie is a 10-year-old Scottish Terrier who suffers from separation anxiety. Weighing 20 kilograms (about 45 pounds), he was too big for the room. He must fly with airline-approved checked baggage, a pressurized box (but not necessarily a temperature-controlled box). (Service dogs are allowed in the cabin, but Charlie isn’t very helpful.)

The flight from Toronto to Vancouver takes about five hours, including an indefinite layover on the tarmac, and we signed a lease for hot asphalt season on July 1st. Air Canada imposes temperature restrictions on pet travel on domestic flights when temperatures exceed 29.5 degrees. Not so WestJet, which said: “We love Canada, but unfortunately, heat is not a problem.” We continue in the wake of British Columbia’s extreme heat wave, the worst weather event in Canadian history during which the province The temperature reached 49.6 degrees Celsius.

Pet Friendly Hotels In Canada For Your Next Vacation

Both WestJet and Air Canada’s websites state that the airlines are not responsible for the care or feeding of pets during travel. I want to know who is responsible. To us, Charlie was a sweet-natured yet conflicted furball, a restless furball who liked Black Forest ham more than I did and tended to walk a tightrope, trying to uproot every tree he passed. He is an airline commodity.

Fortunately, airlines don’t put animals in luggage, but even one example is enough to confuse pet owners.

In 2013, Larry Greyhound died while traveling on Air Canada. In 2017, WestJet put Cooper, a Labrador, on the wrong flight. Earlier this year, Air Canada lost Dovey the cat at Toronto Pearson Airport. He had been missing for more than three weeks before he was found, and he was emaciated. Due’s owner had originally booked a direct flight, but the airline changed.

These are common questions when flying with pets. But we’re traveling during a pandemic, and Covid-19 hasn’t been kind to the skies. Travel restrictions, labor shortages and flight reductions can lead to overbookings, last-minute cancellations, departure time changes and flight changes without warning. What if we built the plane and built Charlie? What if our plane switched to one without climate control?

My husband and I moved to Vancouver in July and settled down, leaving Charlie with my parents and their large garden. We went back in October to bring him home and spent a lot of time planning our great Canadian dog road trip.

“I’m like the dog’s administrative assistant,” my husband joked as we scrambled to schedule vet appointments, rent a car and confirm dog-friendly hotels.

If you don’t have your own car, it’s cheaper to fly, so since I haven’t been to much of Canada – we decided to travel as much as we could under Covid-19 restrictions.

Before the pandemic, I traveled mostly internationally. I thought Canada would always be strong until I retired after seeing the world. I was in no rush to explore this great country and perhaps took it for granted.

So without Charlie I would never have seen the Terry Fox Memorial in Thunder Bay, deserted at dawn except for dog walkers. I might have missed Lake Louise, Winnipeg’s Canadian Museum for Human Rights and its idle tour buses. Under no other circumstances would I visit the world-famous Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alta., where taxidermy models of gophers helped local farmers solve their rodent problems and transformed a small town became an international destination.

When we finally arrived at our new home, exhausted and smelling like a gas station bathroom, Charlie took a few tentative steps to our balcony with its view of the North Shore Mountains. He sniffed, turned around, and returned indifferently. When I found out dogs weren’t allowed
