Chinese Restaurants With Outdoor Seating Near Me – Although The Privé Group’s EMPRESS has been open for a long time and I’ve passed the restaurant many times, I didn’t really understand how beautiful the place was until I had the chance to try it a while ago.
Located in the Asian Culture Museum, EMPRESS, run by the same people behind the popular Privé, Match and The Green Door, offers a large space (indoors and outdoors, waterfront) where guests can enjoy quality Cantonese cuisine or just a drink. .

Although most of us locals (especially me) avoid sitting outside because of the heat, I was tempted to enjoy dinner at EMPRESS Waterfront because it was so amazing. I hear they’re improving the exterior to make it look even better, so I’m really looking forward to that. For those of you looking for a happy hour (4pm to 8pm) in the Boat Quay area, this is definitely a place to check out – I haven’t tried the cocktails, but can’t vouch for that at this point. There’s also a small menu of bar snacks if you’re feeling peckish.

As someone who takes a lot of interior photos (mostly hotels), I couldn’t resist taking more photos because the restaurant was so beautiful. Based on Chinese elements, the design of EMPRESS is modern yet elegant. If you don’t love how beautiful the outdoor dining area is, you will definitely love the main dining area.
If you haven’t realized it yet, the back of the restaurant is part of the facade of the Asian Culture Museum and honestly, the designers have done such a great job integrating various design elements seamlessly to create this exciting space. The main dining room can accommodate around 80 people and the space can also be rented for small and medium-sized events.
If you want to host a private dinner for your friends and family, EMPRESS has a private dining room that comfortably seats up to 14 people at a long table. This area is partially separated from the main dining room by Chinese screens and offers spectacular views of the river (especially at sunset).
Although the doors are usually closed in the afternoon to let the air conditioning work wonders, EMPRESS usually keeps its doors open in the evening so guests can enjoy the view (and hopefully the sunset if you’re lucky) while enjoying delicious Cantonese cuisine. Ticket price.

Although I could go on and on about the design and interior, this post is really more about the food than anything else. First, a quick overview of what to expect at EMPRESS. This new dining concept focuses on quality Cantonese food (despite the chichi interior) and the menu largely mirrors what you’d find at an established restaurant (with a few tweaks here and there). Most of the dishes here come in three sizes – small, medium and large – and usually serve 2, 4-6 and 8.
One dish I really liked was the Crispy Eggplant and Pork Floss (from $10++). Although I am not usually a fan of eggplants, I have eaten several servings of this dish. Sliced eggplants are thinly coated in batter and fried before being generously stuffed with pork floss. I think it goes well with alcohol (which is also served in a restaurant or outdoor bar).
Here’s a dish you’ll never see in a Cantonese restaurant, the Crispy Aromatic Duck Salad (S$18++). Served on a bed of spinach with pomelo, pear, goji berries, Chinese figs and a delicious plum-citrus dressing. I never get tired of this salad. Note that this dish comes in a single size (unlike most EMPRESS dishes) and is actually quite a large portion, so definitely plan to share!
No trip to EMPRESS is complete without trying the signature Steak Platter (from S$28++). The one pictured above is the medium size, so it costs S$42++. It costs a little more than most of us are used to, but you get a perfectly prepared plate of meat. To be honest, I thought the roast pork was the least impressive of all, but the char siew and pork ribs were really good. If you like fat (or thin!) portions, don’t forget to let the staff know!

Soups are always a good measure for a Cantonese restaurant and this King Prawn Dumplings in Supreme Broth (S$14++) passed the test with flying colours! I love the intensity and consistency of this rich, thick broth. The soup is also the star of this dish, compared to the pasta with king prawns. There is also an alternative version with pumpkin, served in a teapot if you prefer.
Although the restaurant is really beautiful both during the day and at night, it is also very dim during the day, which makes photographing at night very difficult. While the Seared Angus Beef Tenderloin Cubes (from S$32++) were cooked very well, I thought the Singapore Chilli King Prawns with Golden Manto (from S$28++) were more impressive. I love the sweetness of this sauce and how easy this dish is to eat (compared to the crab version). Also perfect for cradling and ‘soaking’ the slightly thicker golden mando sauce.
For carbs, we decided on the interesting fried brown rice medley (from S$20++), which reminded me of Korean bibimbap in presentation. Although an interesting combination of ingredients works, this dish lacks wok hay. I loved the chewiness and texture, but unfortunately it was a bit of a letdown – save room (and money!) for desserts!
EMPRESS has an innovative and somewhat surprising dessert menu. Instead of our usual Chinese desserts, the culinary team decided to reinvent some favorites by reinventing them or presenting them in an alternative way. Although the Crispy Prosperity Neon Gao, Yum & Sweet Potato Stock (S$12++) was originally only released for Lunar New Year (2016), the restaurant decided to keep the dish on the regular menu due to overwhelming feedback. .

But the best dessert I tried that night had to be this extraordinary Sticky Date & Longan Pudding (S$12++). Although sticky date puddings are not commonly found in Cantonese restaurants, I thought it would be smart to include dried logans (commonly found at Cheng Teng). Be sure to try this recipe while you’re here!
I think it’s safe to say that Empress made an impression from the moment I stepped inside. The decor is impeccable and the presentation of the food is simple and elegant. Sure, the prices are high, but overall you get what you pay for – a nice place to eat, good music and atmosphere, and consistently good food with a few misses (perhaps most notably). I will definitely be back for happy hour at EMPRESS (probably when their outdoor space is finished) and another visit to Char Siew.
