Dog Friendly Vacations Missouri – Note that our next three stops were all visiting family and friends (St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver). We ventured out to do some dog-friendly activities, but mostly we relaxed and hung out with some wonderful people who opened their homes to us and made our trip even better. I am grateful to everyone who shared their home with Sulu and me and supported us on this journey.
After Ohio, we drove another 8 hours to St. Louis to visit my aunt who lives out of town. It was a pleasure to spend time with him, especially since I had never seen him before in Missouri. I often see him at family events, but this was a great opportunity for us to spend some real time together. He spoiled me with delicious food and wine and gave me a gift of oatmeal at St. Louis “Dog Days of Summer”. We had a great time. Thanks again!
Dog Friendly Vacations Missouri
Granted, I wasn’t planning on doing much “touring” on this trip, but I really wanted to see the St. Louis Gateway Arch. When my aunt told me (how did I not know that?) that her goal was “Gate to the West,” there was no way I was going to miss it. If it symbolizes the exploration of the West, it is perfect for our journey.
Bringing Dogs To The Upper Missouri River Breaks: Guidelines
The park is dog friendly, but it was close to 90 degrees and humid when we arrived early in the morning. The oats also lasted about 45 minutes before reheating.
After the oats warmed up a bit (again – see our Ohio post!) I quickly looked for a place to cool them down. I found Adventure Dog Park so I called and spoke directly with the owner. That said, they have some great little places to cool off, just no actual swimming (I also looked at a dive center in St. Louis, but when I called they already closed the pool after work) – but that was enough for me – just to cool off.
Treecourt was amazing and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting (or living nearby) St. There were lots of friendly dogs with their owners, two small dog pools with running water to cool off, tons of space to run and explore, and a small mineral pool because apparently the area is known for its mineral water. Havre has a dog version of a day resort and I met many sweet dog owners.
We are very lucky with that. We visited St. Louis the day after Labor Day, so my aunt mentioned that many public pools in the city are now open to dogs. There were probably between 50 and 60 dogs, all swimming and chasing game. I think they do a few more pool days in early September, but we were very grateful that we were there on the day most of the pools were open to dogs. I didn’t bring my camera to the pool, which was smart because I got soaked when I went, but here’s a little phone video of him swimming.

My aunt also has a beautiful butterfly garden where she raises monarchs and releases them into the wild every year. I had about 8 puppies there, but we also saw a bunch of butterflies in her garden, so I had to take some photos. Sometimes I photograph things other than Havre… sometimes.

Most of the best dog-friendly beaches and swimming areas are in or around Columbia City, where there are many state parks and natural areas and hiking trails. In fact, many of these areas have dedicated dog parks, pools, and lakes for pets to cool off in. When choosing a Missouri vacation rental, keep in mind that state parks have strict rules for dogs at public beaches and swimming areas. However, pets are allowed on the hiking trails. Twin Lakes Recreation Area is located on the southern tip of Columbia and offers fun for dogs. The enclosure includes a large lawn, paws pond and part of the beach, and a 16-acre dual-use fishing lake that gives the dog plenty of room to run and swim. Although the beach is closed between November and March, thin ice can be a problem for two- and four-legged animals – it’s open and off-limits year-round. There are pet-friendly vacation rentals in the area within walking distance of the park. In fact, if you find one at the Hinkson Forest Preserve, you can walk your dog (on a dog leash) all the way to the park. While you watch your dog, the rest of the family can swim in nearby Little Matthews Cove, take a walk in the literal backyard or along Hinkson Creek. Later, take a stroll through the Forum Nature Area and Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands.

If you head north from downtown Columbia, you’ll hit Garth Nature Area with its own dog park and pet pool and beach. Although neither the beach nor the pool are that big – the whole park is 3 hectares, enough for your dog to stretch his legs and have fun. The dog park is part of the Great Garth Nature Area and has trails through trees, ponds and wetlands. Stroll around with your dog or take the Bear Stream Trail from this park to Cosmo Park. Afterwards, you can treat us both to great food at Hooligan, Smokey Chicken BBQ and 44 Stone Pub. Get ready to go hiking with your dog.
Southeast of Columbia is Grindstone Nature Area, which offers the largest outdoor area on the dog list at 200 acres. Explore the Grindstone Nature Trail, which winds through woods and fields. Climb to the top of Lost Mountain for a beautiful view, or take your pup for a stroll in the creek, which is totally allowed. However, the Hinkson Creek Trail, which runs through the natural area, is also unshakable. When your dog gets tired of all the excitement, head up the hill at Cape Town Park for amazing views.
Lake Stephens Park is one of the few places that isn’t dog- or people-friendly, though. Walk with Fido to the sandy beach, let him get his feet wet, and take a walk around the lake and even across it (through a gate board that meets an island in the middle). After giving your pooch an outdoor adventure, treat yourself to a game at Columbia Country Club, then spend some time in the North Village. Grab a bite to eat at Shakespeare’s Pizza Downtown or Flat Bar & Grill (dogs allowed) and watch a show at the Blue Note or Broadway on Broadway (no dogs allowed).

Broemmelsiek Park in Loyalty, Missouri is a rural getaway that offers solitude and one-on-one time with you and your four-legged best friend. Although dogs are not allowed in the lake park, there is a 4.7 fenced dog park with its own pool and beach. After some exertion, take it for a walk in the park at Brommelseck Park. There are over 400 acres to explore and plenty of trails. Come back in the evening and see some stars in the Astronomy Zone. If you want to explore more, head to Weldon Springs Conservation Area and Howell Island Conservation Area. Float on the Missouri River Rent a canoe and go on an adventure with your pet (some rentals allow it). Nearby Peace Park offers some historic sites, including Thomas Jefferson’s original grave marker and Francis Quadrangle.
