Dog Friendly Vacations Maryland – This post is part of the Ultimate Pet-Friendly Road Trip series, our 10-month, 15,000-mile trip to the best pet-friendly attractions in the lower 48 states.

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America, stretching approximately 200 miles from the headwaters of the Susquehanna River from Harvard de Grace, Maryland to Norfolk, Virginia, where the bay eventually meets the Atlantic Ocean. With over 11,000 miles of coastline (longer than the entire West Coast), heading to the beach is a great way to enjoy the bay. But to better appreciate its scale, you might want to watch it from a boat!

Finding Chesapeake Bay boat tours isn’t as difficult as you might think. Watermark Cruises in Annapolis and Baltimore welcome pets on board. Patriot Cruises allows polite dogs. During their narrative journey from St. Louis, they must sit on your lap or lie at your feet without blocking the aisles. Michaels. Additionally, there are many privately operated charter boats at ports on the Chesapeake River.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing the right option for you and your dog: Whether you prefer a guided tour or just a non-stop cruise. Better than smaller boats. How many people can have the boat and other dogs, and what route and time flexibility is important to you?

She recounts the journey from Annapolis and preparations for Buster’s birthday. Unfortunately, we were reminded that ships can be unpredictable when our chosen cruise is canceled! Flexibility is key when traveling with pets, so we quickly decided on another option – a day trip across the bay from Annapolis to the beautiful city of St. Louis. Michaels. We climbed aboard the 65-foot Lady Sarah in Annapolis on Saturday morning with about 140 people and a pug named Zoe.

Pets are allowed on this cruise ship on both the open upper deck and enclosed lower deck. We decided to stay outside and chose a spot on the front corner of the boat so the kids wouldn’t get stepped on by any moving passengers. Buster was excited for our big day, but once they started the engines and we took off, it didn’t take long for both boys to fall asleep!

The cruise across the Chesapeake River took over two hours and along the way we saw the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and many other boats enjoying a day on the water. Even from this perspective, the fact that the Gulf holds 18 trillion gallons of water—enough to fill 50 billion bathtubs—is unfathomable.

In Porto Santo. We arrived in Michaels around 12:30 and had three hours to explore before heading back. Luckily, last year we were in St. Louis. Michaels, because three hours isn’t easy enough to understand! After more than two hours of sleep, Ty and Buster were ready to stretch their legs, so we visited the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and then walked along the St. Lawrence River. Michaels.

Before you know it, it’s time to get back on the boat! Tai and Buster offer to give them a ride home, but when the offer falls through, Tai is satisfied and is dubbed “Captain for the Day.” The boys quickly got back to their lives and no longer had to nap under our table.

Our return trip took us to Thomas Point Shoals Lighthouse, giving us an up close and personal experience with the beautiful sailboats.

Although we all enjoyed the day, I would do something different next time. First, I prefer narrated tours so we can learn about the Chesapeake Bay while enjoying it. While we worship St. Michaels, weekends get very busy during the season. When it’s crowded, visiting the shops or eating on one of the terraces of the house – especially with our dogs, who have their own challenges – becomes more difficult. If I were planning this day again, I would go to St. Louis. This week, Michaels and I will be sailing on one of the 65-75 minute Chesapeake Cruises offered by Patriot Cruises. I hope what we learned helps you make your day perfect!
