She enjoys reading at weekends, exploring Cornwall (wherever there is a good cafe) and running with her husband. St Ives is one of the most popular places to visit in Cornwall. In 2019/20, more than 250 thousand people came to the beautiful port city. It is famous for its art galleries, including The Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden, and has inspired artists including ceramicists Bernard Leach, Ben Nicholson and Ben Wallis. Luckily, there are plenty of dog-friendly activities in St Ives, whether you’re just visiting for the day or staying in one of the town’s many seaside cottages.
St Ives can be quite chaotic in summer as this is the most popular time to visit. It can be very busy for dogs (and their owners!) so consider visiting when it’s a little quieter. We love nothing more than walking the cobbled streets in winter, lighting the twinkling Christmas lights and enjoying a quiet lunch by the harbour. Visiting Cornwall with your dog in winter (most of the photos in this post were taken in November) is a completely different experience but no less beautiful.
The Cornwall Public Places Protection Order (PSPO) was updated in 2020, making many beaches dog-friendly in the evenings throughout the year. From May to September, seasonal restrictions remain in place between 10am and 6pm, which includes most beaches in St Ives. The only exception is Tidal Beach in Bamaluz which is only accessible at high tide.
A Dog Friendly Guide To Cornwall
For dogs who like more space to run and play, take the 10-minute bus ride to Porthkidney Sands. You can also walk here via the South West Coast Path from St Ives. It’s a nice, flat walk through the dunes and down to the sandy beaches. Fun fact: Porthkidney is the only beach in Cornwall where Woody plays with us!
If you are looking for a quiet place, away from other dogs, I highly recommend booking a safe dog kennel at Natural Cornish Pet in nearby St Earth. The zoo’s level 6 mesh fence is well maintained and regularly checked for holes. There is also a small forest, water supply and sitting area within the secure area. So you can safely enjoy a cup of coffee while your dog goes out to explore.
Like many seaside towns, St Ives is a great place for a day walk on the South West Coast Path. The route west to Gennor and the Penwith Heritage Coast is spectacular but technical. You definitely need proper walking shoes if you do this! On the other hand, if you drive to Botalac, the route will be much flatter with the added benefit of ancient mining architecture scattered along the coast.
The last mine is working in St. Actually the Gewor Tin mine is in Pendin. It produced over 50,000 tonnes of black tin when it closed in 1990. It is now a heritage museum and tourist attraction. Dogs are welcome everywhere (except inside the underground mines!) and it’s a great day out for all the family. For more adventures, St Ives is ideal for long days in Penzance, including St Michael’s Mount, Land’s End and Porthleven.
The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In Cornwall
Fortunately most pubs in Cornwall are dog friendly; I definitely think it should be a UK wide standard! We enjoyed lunch recently at The Lifeboat Hotel in the center of the harbour. Part of the St Austell Brewery Group, this pub offers a wide range of Cornish-style ales, ales and ciders, including the Pear Rattler, my all-time favourite!
Hubbox first started as a shipping container in Truro. From there they spread throughout the Southwest. Their St Ives restaurant is situated on the harbor and serves a range of award-winning burgers, craft beers and cocktails. Dogs are welcome to join their owners at Hubbox, although you may find yourself begging under the table when you see the size of your locally sourced Cornish beef burger!
No trip to St Ives would be complete without a visit to Willie Waller’s Ice Cream Factory. There are over 30 delicious flavors to choose from and don’t even get me started on the toppings. Watch out for the seagulls as they swoop down and steal a piece or even the whole hat if you’re not careful!
For a snack on the go, you can’t go wrong with an old Cornish pasty. St Ives Bakery is hidden in the cobbled streets of Fore Street. You can buy handmade bread, cakes and of course cakes from the independent family run bakery.
