The trail begins in a lush forest, passing a small pond. It’s a bit of a steady walk up to the lake, but it’s never too fast.
Afterwards the path cuts through the trees and into the bushes. If you visit in June or July there are beautiful flowers. The flat trees allow a full view to the west, with Lake Keppels in the distance.
Crossing Frog Lake (if you miss the exit because it’s behind you), the trail goes up the PCT to Lake Winnemucca.

There are many good spots for swimming and fishing in the lake. The path to the island lake exits from outside the lake and gets even more rocky, crossing several small lakes for the last 200 feet to the island lake.
