Dog Friendly Lodging Jamestown Ri – I love the 100 different trails in Jamestown. For many, it is an island between bridges, a city next to Newport, a shop in front of the toll. For me, it’s all about quiet roads and ocean views, historic lighthouses and beautiful parks. Here you’ll find tranquil farms and historic castles, diving spots and seafood menus. Spend the afternoon watching the sailboats in the bay, sunbathe or swim. When you want to move, jump in a kayak and glide through the sights of tall ships and beautiful piers. If you prefer to stay dry, grab a bagel and a bike and ride around the island and challenge yourself on the rolling hills. If you prefer golf, play 9 holes at the local course – I can hear the burger after the shot.
Newport gets all the attention and anyone who knows about Jamestown is fine with that. Jamestown Newports kind, super cool neighbors don’t need to brag. It’s Newport in miniature, which means fewer crowds and generally less stress. It’s easy to park, easy to walk, easy to bike, and easy to order dinner (but you probably don’t need to). You can go to Newport for the vineyards and the folk festival and the sailboat races and the nightlife, and I don’t want to spoil anything, I love Newport too, but when I want things to be slower I go to Jamestown.
Dog Friendly Lodging Jamestown Ri
Until this summer, I’d only spend a day or an afternoon in Jamestown—either diving and dinner with friends, or stopping for food on the way home when people in Newport drove me back to the bridge. Three days in Jamestown meant I had more time to explore the island. For this trip, I left my scuba gear behind and enjoyed the island by walking and biking. If you don’t want to leave your dogs behind, I’m happy to say this is not the place for you. Jamestown is one of the most dog-friendly places I’ve ever visited, with lots of beaches, restaurants, and dog parks.

I stayed with my parents in an RV parked at Fort Getty Park**. If you are camping (RV or tent) this is a great home base with bathroom/shower facilities, hiking trails, dog friendly cove/beach, boat ramp and sailing camp for kids. If camping isn’t for you, there are plenty of hotels on the island, from affordable to luxury. Here is a list of the top 10 places to stay on the island on Tripadvisor. **Fort Getty is beautiful with the remains of the historic fort, fishing pier, boat, beach, pavilion, and hiking trail, but there is a fee. If you’re staying anywhere else on the island, I’d skip Fort Getty and save yourself. A $20 daily parking pass saves more time for more interesting state parks that offer free admission.
Jamestown is 1.5 hours from the central Connecticut coast. I left on Friday around 10:30am with two dogs and a 3 month old with plans to be in Jamestown by lunch. Since I have dogs, I like a quiet place off the main road with easy/close parking. I walked into the quaint Village Hearth Bakery and Cafe, which is surprisingly dog-friendly inside and out. The beautiful Jamestown Community Playground is the best playground I’ve ever seen, and its location on the street made it the perfect place to take a trip with the kids (let the kids run around while they sit down for a delicious lunch on the plaza) . Lunch is a bit pricey ($16 for a sandwich and iced coffee), but I’m glad to find such a great little place with friendly staff and a dog-friendly atmosphere.
After lunch, you can make a quick stop and then check in to wherever you decide to stay for the weekend. Located in the Windmill Hill Historic District, the Jamestown Windmill is listed as one of Jamestown’s top attractions. I have to admit that without his sails the little party and structure would be a bit boring. Stop by on your way into town or bike around the island to see this historic 1787 structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
After lunch I met up with my parents at Fort Getty where we set up camp and spent some time doing exactly what I came here for, rest. Check in, grab a drink and enjoy the cool ocean breeze wherever you are.
Newport Cottage Holiday Rentals
After relaxing, head to Narraganset Avenue, the main street lined with shops and restaurants. Jamestown is a small island and bikeable if you don’t mind a few (okay, a lot) of hills. Grab two wheels, or four if you prefer to drive, and head to dinner on Narraganset Avenue. If you time it right, and you should, you can visit J22 Tap & Table before 6 for their oyster/millet dollar special. There’s nothing better on an island vacation than a raw bar, and at a great price.
J22 is known for its delicious food and stopping for lunch in the small restaurant or on the adjacent terrace is a good option. You can also visit one of the nearby restaurants on the strip – Simpatico offers a beautiful outdoor terrace, the perfect place to enjoy a warm summer evening. Chopmist Charlie offers a family restaurant with seafood. Lots of choice from casual fish and chips to fine dining (list on Tripadvisor here)
End the night with a drink wherever you call home for the weekend. Tomorrow is about the island tour.
Mornings are slow here. No need to wake up early to try to cram everything in. The weekend is enough time to see the sights at a slower pace while still finding time for sleep or a good book. We had breakfast and coffee at the camp when it rained in the morning. When the sky cleared, we got in the car and headed to one of the state parks, Beavertail State Park. Here you can stop and see the lighthouse (the third oldest lighthouse in America) and even go to the lighthouse museum. During this stay, you can expect panoramic views of Narraganset Bay and hiking trails that take you along some of the ocean cliffs. The 2.3 miles of hiking trails around the edge of the park offer some exercise and beautiful views along the way (trails can be a little muddy, and be careful during tick season). This would be a great spot for a picnic if you decide to bring a blanket and lunch (or those easy-to-use “tables in a bag” that make picnicking 100 times easier). If you’d rather sit down to dinner in a restaurant, head into town for something light.
Hotels & Motels In Rhode Island
After lunch, you can rent kayaks or, if you brought a bike, tour the island (a smaller 11 mile circuit in the south/central part or a larger 25 mile circuit that takes you around the island). ). You can also play 9 holes at Jamestown Golf Course. If you prefer to relax, head into town to check out the shops and enjoy views of the bay and pier from East Ferry Beach. Take your dinner and drink and settle down for the night.
Enjoy Sunday brunch on the island. Pack your beach gear and head to Fort Wetherill State Park. Fort Wetherill stands on a 30m granite cliff and is a former coastal defense battery. This area is known and loved for its beautiful views of Newport Harbor as well as the eastern passage of Narragansett Bay. If you’re in town during one of Newport’s Tall Ship Events or America’s Cup races, this is a popular place for boat watching.
Moonrise Kingdom Beach is one of the most beautiful places in New England and a great place to park a beach chair, swim, cliff jump, watch sailboats and scuba dive. This small cove is one of the most popular places to dive in New England, so be sure to stop by and ask the divers about the interesting creatures they encounter while diving. When you need a break from the beach, check out the rest of the park. You can now find an abandoned coastal artillery fort, a graffiti canvas and another vantage point over the bay.
After the beach and probably out of town, take a leisurely trip around the island to see the lesser-known parts of town. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, farms, millions of rabbits, and quiet little parks and beaches inhabited by locals.
