Located in southern Utah, near Bryce Canyon National Park and Dixie National Forest, Zion is truly amazing. Elevated from 3,600 to 8,700 feet, the park protects a wide variety of wildlife, flora and fauna.

The best time to visit Zion National Park with pets is any time but summer! The park welcomed 5 million visitors in 2021, making it the second most visited park in the US. And in addition to the crowds, the summer heat in Zion can be brutal. On our trip in late August, it reached 104 degrees at the bottom of the canyon!

For a quiet visit, consider visiting Zion in the winter. With more than 550,000 visitors coming to the park at the peak of July, December and January each see the fifth most people in history. And even though it’s the middle of winter, daytime temperatures often reach 54 degrees, perfect weather for exploring with your dog!

To our RV friends: Prepare to arrive at Zion’s South Gate. From the east side of the park is through the historic road. Most RVs, buses, trailers, five-wheelers, motorhomes, RVs, and boats require traffic control, which means drivers must stop for oncoming traffic.

At Zion National Park, furry pets can join you in all of the designated areas. This includes public highways and parking lots, camping areas, 22 off-ramps on Highway 9 (Zion – Mount Carmel Highway) and Paras Road. Additionally, pets are allowed in the picnic areas and Zion Lodge grounds.

Pet Friendly Stays

Pets are not allowed on any other routes, which means that traveling together in Zion is limited. But keep reading – we’ve got a great pet-friendly solution you’ll love!

Finally, pets are not allowed in wilderness areas, on tour buses, or in any of the park’s lodges, including Zion Lodge.

There are two entrances to Zion National Park, the East Gate and the South Gate. As you approach the East Gate, you will immediately be surrounded by a beautiful landscape. If so, go to the visitor center. But stop every now and then to see the tall cream, pink and red sandstone.

From the visitor center, cross the road and the bridge over the river to take the pet-friendly Paras Trail. Following the Virgin River through the canyon, the trail travels 1.8 miles to Canyon Junction.

Be prepared to spend several hours walking the trail. Or pack a picnic and have more time. And for a longer hike, read the section on Zion Canyon.

If you’re visiting Zion with your pets during the summer, plan to hike the Paras Trail early in the morning or at sunset.

It’s hot! And there is not much shade. And freezing in the river is not an option. Zion monitors the presence of cyanobacteria and dangerous cyanotoxins in the Virgin River within the park. These hazards can occur at any time, so keep your dogs on a leash and out of the water.

It’s also great for packing your dog’s shoes! There are many bridges on the way to Paras, and on sunny days the composite material of which the roof is made is very hot. Before your pet walks on bridges, hold the surface so it doesn’t burn its claws.

When you arrive at Zion’s South Gate, after checking out the Visitor Center and walking the Paras Trail, head to the East Gate and enjoy the selections along the way.

The main attraction of Zion National Park is Zion Canyon. The famous Hanging Gardens, waterfalls and Sion Lodge are located here. For many years, access to Zion Canyon has been open only to buses. And no pets are allowed on the shuttles.

Yes, you can take a shuttle to see Zion Canyon. Or you can find a local daycare or pet shelter. But if you want to see Zion Canyon with your pets, you have two options.

Lodging In Zion National Park

The first is to walk or ride a bike. Pets are welcome on all of Zion’s paved roads. And year-round, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is serviced by buses. Take the Pa’rus Trail 1.8 miles from the visitor center to Canyon Junction, where the road closure begins. From here, it is 5.9 miles to the end of the road leading to Shinawawa Temple.

Your second option is to visit Sion when the shuttles are down. (That’s why we’ve got you covered for your December or January trip!)

The Zion Shuttle service closes from late November until just before Christmas. And during this time, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is open to special vehicles. This is your window to drive the famous canyon with your best friend. Just remember that pets must be kept on sidewalks or in paved areas.

The town of Springdale is near the south gate of Zion. They are pet-friendly hotels, campsites, restaurants and dog kennels, and pet-friendly receptions.

To explore the most popular part of Zion National Park with your pets, continue west on Highway 9 to Kolob Terrace Road, then head north. The 25-mile hike climbs from 3,550 to 8,118 feet and passes in and out of the park. But it’s the views that make the trip fun!

You will pass several trailheads along the way. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed on either route. But there is a picnic area and a view of Lava Point that is worth a visit!

At the end of the road is the Kolob Reservoir. In addition to being an amazing body of water, the temperature here was about 20 degrees cooler than Springdale on the day we visited!

Two states of Dixie National Forest are only a short drive from Zion! The Pine Valley Ranger District is located north of St. George, Utah. And the Cedar City Ranger District is east of Cedar City, Utah. Both areas offer excellent transportation. Or visit our favorite area in Dixie – Red Canyon. The good news is that all of Dixie’s rides are pet-friendly!
