Dog Friendly Vacations Southern California
I live in San Francisco and do dog-friendly posts covering small towns in Northern California. However, there are plenty of dog-friendly hiking trails in California waiting for you with sunny weather, beach towns with warm water (Northern California beaches are notoriously cold and windy), lots of hiking, wine tasting, and of course, good food. Dogs welcome.
Great Dog Friendly Beaches In California
Although our trips to Southern California with our pups (Babu: 2010-2021 and now Gunda) are limited compared to the vast expanses of Northern California, we headed south from Santa Barbara. For many winter vacationers, a trip to Los Angeles is a vacation tradition.
With that in mind, here are 10 great dog-friendly hikes in Southern California that can easily be turned into a day trip with dogs from major SoCal cities like Los Angeles or San Diego and are about a two and a half hour drive away. traffic permit).
These include beach towns, small towns, wine tasting trails, desert resorts, and even a famous state park worth visiting with your dog on a trip to Southern California. I hope this guide to dog-friendly places in Southern California that are easy to get to from Los Angeles or San Diego helps you experience the diversity of Southern California beyond the big cities.
A) Southern California has warm, sunny California weather with warm ocean water most of the year. But the summer is hot and hot, and it’s painful for you and dangerous for your puppy (especially his delicate paws). If you’re planning a day trip with dogs in Southern California between June and September, stick to beach spots rather than inland destinations.
Dog Friendly Los Angeles: Visiting La With A Dog
November through March are the best time to visit inland areas like Palm Springs, Ojai or Joshua Tree, California’s popular winter season. However, winter is the rainy season in California. So prepare for rain showers and be flexible with your schedule.
B) If you want to start a dog-friendly trip from Los Angeles or San Diego, it’s best to drive your own car. You can rent a car at major airports in Los Angeles, San Diego or Southern California.
Los Angeles is incredibly friendly, but its location also puts it close to some spectacular dog-friendly places in California that are definitely worth visiting if you have the time. Additionally, none of Los Angeles’ beaches allow dogs, making it even more encouraging to take a dog-friendly day trip from Los Angeles. Here are my tips based on our repeated trips with Babu and Gunda during the winter break:
Just 30 minutes from Los Angeles, Long Beach features the county’s most popular dog beach, Rosie’s Dog Beach. Additionally, the stores, shops and restaurants in Belmont Shores are very friendly.
Pet Friendly Island Paws Program
Long Beach has 11 dog parks, including the popular El Dorado Park, Uptown Dog Park, K-9 Corner Dog Park, and Bixby Dog Park. Additionally, there are several dog-friendly restaurants on 4th Street, Downtown, Belmont Heights and Downtown, all of which you can visit in this dog-friendly Long Beach!

Malibu may be synonymous with celebrity retreats and Hollywood weddings, but it’s also popular with four-legged friends! Leo Carrillo State Beach is dog-friendly and there are plenty of dog-friendly hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains to keep your pup busy. There is also the lesser-known wine country of Malibu, where you can enjoy wine tasting with your dog.
I recommend stopping at Escondido Grand Canyon National Park to hike the dog-friendly Escondido Falls Trail, explore the Solstice Canyon Trail, hike the Grand Canyon Zuma Loop Trail, or conquer Mish Mokwa for a dog-friendly tour of Malibu. There are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants along Highway 1 in Malibu to stop at after a day of hiking – check out Fido’s helpful posts here.
Dog Friendly Guide To Palm Springs — Hellorubydoodle
Ojai is one of the best dog-friendly hiking trails in Southern California and absolutely blew us away on our 2019 trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Although there are no dog-friendly beaches on the mainland, there are plenty of fun and dog-friendly activities to explore in this artsy California town.
Visit the dog-friendly Arcade Square Store, stop by Barth’s Books, try kombucha at the Revel Kombucha Bar, and walk your dog in Libby Park. Ojai is home to dog-friendly restaurants and cafes, including Farmer and Chef, Magdalor Coffee Company, and Ojai Roti Mauba (Greater Fatou District) in Lebanon. It is good for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Ojai has many wineries such as Toppa Mountain Winery and Old Creek Ranch Winery. We enjoyed our short winter stay in Ojai and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Santa Barbara is known as the “American Riviera” for its picturesque beaches, swaying palm trees and year-round summer atmosphere. Santa Barbara is also very dog-friendly, with many dog-friendly beaches, restaurants, and other attractions. If your dog loves the ocean and sand, Santa Barbara is definitely a dog-friendly trip from Los Angeles to visit.
Pet Friendly Vacation Spots Across America That Your Dog Will Love
We have visited Santa Barbara many times over the past 12 years and have always enjoyed exploring the city with our dogs, rain or shine. If you are spending a day in Santa Barbara, there are several beaches and dog parks.
My recommendations are to start at Hendry Beach (also known as Arroyo Borough Beach County Park) near the Douglas Family Preserve or stroll around Thousand Step Beach or Quiet Mesa Road Beach, walk along Shoreline Park and through Memorial Park to Stroll Alice Cake Park. .
Santa Barbara Pier and the Santa Barbara Mission Rose Garden are dog-friendly, and the County Courthouse Gardens are not to be missed. And if that’s not all, dogs are allowed at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden, and they’re free!
Downtown Santa Barbara, La Arcada Square, Funk District is a great place to explore and eat with your dog. Additionally, Santa Barbara is home to dog-friendly wine tasting rooms where you can enjoy tasting some of the best wines in the Santa Ynez Valley. Dog Friendly Campsites On California Beaches
Solvang (which means “sunny fields” in Danish) seems to have come from a Danish legend. Often cited as one of the most beautiful cities in California, this unique little town with a strong Scandinavian feel is very dog friendly.
We have been to Solvang twice and loved everything. The main attractions are Town Square is the centerpiece of Mission Drive, and there’s nothing to do on a day trip from Los Angeles.
In addition to the fun windmills and the Little Mermaid Fountain, another dog-friendly spot in Solvang is the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, which features many of the Danish author’s most memorable literary works. The bakeries are dog friendly and offer outdoor seating. If you love wine, a visit to Stav Dog Winery is a must!
You can visit one of the many dog-friendly wineries outside of Solvang, go wine tasting in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, and stop by Ostrichland America (an ostrich farm and its mother) to pet these fun birds! Read the dog-friendly Solvang guide to learn more about where to take your dog for a day trip in this beautiful city.
