Huntington Dog Beach does not allow barbecues for a number of reasons, so please bring a packed lunch or check out some of the fantastic dog-friendly restaurants nearby.
There are no fences at Huntington Dog Beach, so it is strongly recommended that you keep your dog on a lead until you are fully aware of its behavior on the beach and in the water. Dogs do not live well here. With its year-round mild climate and abundance of open space, SLO CAL can make even the wildest canine dreams come true. There are dog parks along the coast for some nice play and sniffing. There are plenty of mountains with dog-friendly trails for exercise and exploration. For a delicious meal, there are restaurants with patios that are perfect for puppies. And for unbridled fun, there are dog beaches that let Rover run around the sand at full speed, often off-leash. So bring a dog bowl and go: your four-legged friend will love it here.
A little note: The list below includes both mandatory and optional chain sites in SLO CAL. In off-leash areas, only remove the leash if your dog is polite, non-aggressive and obedient to your commands. And wherever you go, always be prepared to take your pet with you.

Holidays At Garda Lake
Cayucos State Beach, located just off Highway 1 in the seaside town of Cayucos, beckons pups and humans alike to play in the waves. Take a stroll around Cayucos Pier or stroll south along the coast towards Mora Bay. Leashes are required in Cayucos, but if you want a nice run on the sand, run south to North Point Beach in Mora Bay, where leashes are optional. Or, if you want to walk the entire six-mile stretch to Mora Rock, leash your dog and walk to Mora Rock Beach. Los Osos Baywood Park is home to Montaña de Oro State Park, one of California’s largest and most beloved state parks. Named after the golden wildflowers that grow in the mountains in spring, Montaña de Oro invites people and dogs to sniff and picnic on Spooners Cove Beach. Chains will be needed here. (And note that dogs are not allowed on the hiking trails or on any of the other beaches in the park.) Follow Los Osos Valley Road northwest until it becomes Pecha Valley Road and follow the signs to Spooners Beach – Cow.
Take your dog to Avila Beach, just off Highway 101, for an off-leash stroll along two dog-friendly beaches. There you will find Old Port Beach and Fisherman’s Beach along Avila Beach Drive, right in front of Harford Hall. (Note that Avila Beach’s main beach, at the Avila Beach Pier, is dog-free from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) To the left of the Pismo Beach Pier, the stretch of sand between Pismo State Beach and Oceano Dunes State Park, which runs a great spot for off-leash walks with Rover. You can even dig a pit and start a bonfire on the beach at Okiana, perfect for side-by-side grilling with your furry friend. Not in the sand? Head to Dinosaur Caves Park on the bluff at Shell Beach next door for ocean views that go on and on.
To be honest, most of SLO CAL’s many, many tours are dog-friendly as long as Rover stays on a leash and you quickly follow him. But there are a few features that are sure to appeal to the lucky four-legged among us.
On the trail 4 miles up and past San Simeon Point in San Simeon, you and your dog can enjoy views of the bay and even views of Hearst Castle on the hill. Hike more than 17 miles on Cambria’s Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, a network of trails that wind through native pine forest, coastal plains, and along the Pacific coast. In the hills above Kajuka, the Whale Rock Sanctuary invites pets and their humans to walk or run along a 4-mile trail along the water’s edge. Get your blood pumping with a 190-foot hike on the 2-mile Black Hill Trail at Mora Bay State Park. At Los Osos Baywood Park, the Elfin Forest Natural Area Trail includes a 1-mile wheelchair-accessible boardwalk for a leisurely stroll near Mora Bay National Estuary.
Dogs Luv Us And We Luv Them: Travel With Dogs
In Avila Beach, the Bob Jones Trail offers a 4-mile paved road through a sycamore forest to the beach. Or, if Rover really needs to let off some steam, the Ontario Ridge Trail above Shell Beach is rough and steep at 4 miles round trip. In List-Bizun, the popular List Reserve invites dogs to frolic on trails that wind through 900 acres of open space. And in Ocean, the Ocean Dunes Nature Preserve Trail offers a 2-mile loop over the treasured coastal dunes.
Away from the coast, the remote Big Falls Trail and Little Falls Trail on the east side of Arroyo Grande wind under emerald treetops, past waterfalls and swimming holes perfect for your dog on a hot day. This hike is more isolated and may require four-wheel drive.
In San Luis Obispo, hike several mountain trails including Islay Hill Open Space, Terrace Hill, Reservoir Canyon, and Cerro San Luis Obispo. For a more relaxed and casual outing, take the 2.5-mile San Luis Obispo Railroad or the 2-mile Johnson Ranch Open Space.
Above Cuesta Grade, the Rinconado Trail near Santa Margarita gives Rover a 7.7-mile mountain loop to explore in Los Padres National Forest. Or for a summer stroll, head to the Montebello Oaks Trail in Paso Robles for an easy 2-mile round trip.
