Pets & Points: Pet Friendly Hotels Fur Sure!

Rachel Johnson and her husband, Nate, founded 2 Traveling Dogs in 2011. They write a dog journal that follows the RV adventures of rescue dogs Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake as they travel across the United States rescuing animals. With over a million followers on social media, they use their platforms to encourage others to adopt pets and live their best lives together while traveling!

You’ll experience mountain ranges and ocean views when traveling in an RV in the Northeast! Major cities like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia also offer a slice of history and culture. The area has it all, but like all the areas we visited, Brickell and Digby had some dog-friendly RV destinations in the Northeast.

Eleven states make up the northeastern region of the United States, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The climate of the Northeast is different, the winters are very cold. But visiting the area in the summer is a great outing, and the colors of the fall leaves will tempt you to go outside with your dogs.

My favorite part of traveling is the food, and this place has it all: Boston baked beans, cranberries, stew, bagels, bagels, and apples! Our dogs Brickell and Digby were favorites! Maybe we shared some blueberry muffins in Maine!

Perfect Road Trips To Take With Your Dog

Over 19 acres of land on the Mystic River in Connecticut. Mystic Seaport is the largest maritime museum in the United States. But it’s actually a garden! Walk your dog, see beautiful old boats, and learn about the maritime lifestyle prevalent in this part of New England. Pets must be kept on a leash and are welcome in all outdoor areas. Pets can also join the shore cruise if the tour is sized to accommodate a dog on the boat! Choose area RV resorts that have water views and are dog friendly!

Delaware is the second smallest state in the country, but it also offers five beautiful national parks to camp in! We visited Killens Pond State Park near Felton, Delaware. Killens Pond is a great place to kayak, canoe, canoe, boat, and walk the pond with your dog! Killens Pond State Park Campground has 59 single-family campsites with dog-friendly electric and water hookups.

You may have heard of the famous Bar Harbor in Maine. But have you heard of Bass Harbor? Several years into our journey, we can’t stop talking about this road. Bass Harbor, located on the back side of Maine’s Desert Island, is home to much of Acadia National Park. It is located in the southwestern part of the island. Our favorite hike with the dogs was from Bass Harbor Campground to Bass Harbor Lighthouse! It is located here in the park, a short distance southeast of the port. It is one of the most photographed and popular lighthouses in the United States. We still remember the sounds of water, floats and birds. We felt truly at peace. After a day of picking cranberries and eating pie, this hike was perfect. Don’t forget that Acadia National Park has over 100 miles of dog-friendly trails!

Cape Cod, Massachusetts is truly an experience. Cape Cod is a ring-shaped peninsula in the US state of Massachusetts. It’s a popular summer destination, but visiting in the off-season is a great way to avoid the traffic. The beautiful bay and ocean villages, lighthouses, ponds and beaches are your and your dog’s playground. We also enjoyed going to the big city of Hyannis and seeing the ferries. We decided to take the dog ferry to Martha’s Vineyard for some ice cream! Not all dogs have sea legs, so be prepared! RV camping on Cape Cod gives you the perfect starting point for many Massachusetts destinations. You have a choice between rustic or more expensive resort options.

Dog Friendly Vacations Across The United States

There’s only one way to get to this island in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay: by boat. Smith Island is located about 12 miles off the coast of Crisfield, Maryland. Go to the port city of Crisfield and take one of the passenger ferries that operate here. Your dog will love the wind blowing his fur during this 45-minute walk! However, Brickell did not like the trip. Every dog is different. Tell your dog that this island was first explored by Captain John Smith in 1608! More than 200 residents live here year-round, most of whom speak the indigenous dialect. Take your time and wander the streets of the entire island, contemplating the simple way of life. Don’t forget to try Maryland’s official state cake, Smith Island Cake. Few people or dogs can claim to have been here. It is truly an adventure you will not forget.

The White Mountain National Forest in eastern New Hampshire ranges from mountainous hardwood forests to majestic alpine peaks. Come enjoy stunning views, clear mountain lakes and streams, wildlife, and year-round outdoor recreation opportunities with your dog! When they think of New Jersey, few people think of rural areas and farms. But in Sussex, New Jersey, things are different! Pleasant Acres Campground Nestled in the rolling hills of northwest New Jersey, Pleasant Acres Farm offers guests the opportunity to camp in a farm setting! Cutting the grass and the antics of the farm animals are just the beginning. Our dogs loved watching the farm animals and splashing in the river. Additionally, High Point State Park features an epic dog walk. This park is located at the northern tip of New Jersey and has the highest elevation in the state. You can see New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania from the top! If country life tires you out, you’re just a short drive from the Big Apple. Cowboy boots have the best of both worlds.

Warwick, New York is known for its wineries, farming community, and Apple Festival held annually in October. Warwick is a great place for those who want to get lost in nature. We picked Brickle and Digby apples on a beautiful farm and then toured dog-friendly wineries and cideries! What could be better?

When It Comes To Summer, Nothing Beats The Northeast

Have you heard about Kinzua Bridge? Once you see it and stand on the glass floor, you will never forget it. Our dogs of course didn’t forget! Kinzua Bridge State Park is a 339-acre (137 ha) state park in Pennsylvania near Mount Jewett. Kinzua Bridge State Park has been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Parks Bureau as one of “Pennsylvania’s 25 State Parks.”

When it was built in 1882, the Kinzua Bridge was the tallest railway bridge in the world at 301 feet. The section, which still retains part of the original elevated railway, is an interesting place for walking. Visitors and their dogs can walk 600 feet on the remaining support towers, walk for miles through Kinzua Gorge, and gaze up at the half-glass platform at the end of the walkway.

Our stay in Rhode Island was short but memorable. Step back in time on a cliff walk with your dog in Newport, Rhode Island. Located on Newport’s east coast, Cliff Walk is world-famous as a public park that combines the natural beauty of Newport’s coast with the architectural history of Newport’s Gilded Age. The 3.5-mile trail offers panoramic views of the skyline as the Atlantic Ocean crashes over the rocky cliffs and waves crash over the jagged cliffs below. Dogs are allowed on leash.
