Dog Friendly Accommodation

In November 2019 we took our 2 year old chocolate labrador on his first vacation. We chose Forest Vacations because we had stayed at Sherwood Pine before so we knew they allowed dogs, but since this was Winnie’s first time in an unfamiliar environment, we chose a location closer to home than bit: Forest of Dean.

We did some preliminary research and found a few hikes to try in the woods within 15 minutes of this location (although you can leave the cabin and stay in the woods, so you can continue here!)

Since our previous vacation in the woods was our honeymoon, we went to the Golden Oak Cabin Summit, but this time we wanted a cozy place but didn’t need a high-end cabin, so we chose the Silver Birch. This cabin still has a hot tub but no wood burning stove and no additional towels for hot tub use, but since the cabin is configured for 4 people we used extra towels from the bedroom.

We were able to book our holiday while the discount code was available during the January sale so Winnie didn’t have to pay extra (dogs usually cost £15 per night). Make sure when searching for cabins on the website they say “pet friendly” as the results will show you cabins that do not allow pets. We chose weekends (Monday to Friday).

Dog Friendly Places To Stay

At the end of our holiday, we decided to take Winnie on a wildlife experience at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, as we would be much closer together than we would be away from home.

We arrived at 4pm to check in to our warm and cozy log cabin (they allow early check in for an extra fee, but we decided not to do so as we only had 2 hours left in the cabin ).

Upon arrival, we took Winnie into the cabin before unloading the vehicle; He was so excited about his surroundings and new scents that he took us exploring!

The deck area is enclosed and divided into two parts: the upper deck has outdoor seating with tables and chairs and space for disposable grills, and the lower deck is enclosed as a hot tub. There is a second door in the area for staff to enter the spa for daily inspection, but please check that it is properly closed before letting your dog explore, as our door is not completely closed. until I checked (the mother dog came in). work!).

The Jungle Holidays team very kindly left Winnie with a giant hat and some biodegradable poop bags! (She was more interested in the cookies than the bowls, but we appreciated them!) We bought Winnie a bed, some toys, and some medicine to help her settle down.

Tip: You can place it in a brown bag outside the cabin or take it to the on-site dog litter box for proper disposal – we have a day or two to collect before purchasing. We threw them in the trash while traveling.

Winnie didn’t like us in the bathtub away from her, but mixing in the toy snake, frozen yogurt, and some canned sardines soon replaced it the next night.

On arrival we requested a bath mat to bathe Vinny as both the tub and shower have very low surfaces and when bathing at home we always spread it on top for bathing comfort. .

There were a lot of new noises at night (mainly owls and deer) which made Winnie’s sleep difficult and I was very tired. The bed was a double bed instead of our usual super king bed, which meant Winnie was very uncomfortable as she usually lies next to us in the king bed.

Winnie also had trouble adjusting to the polished hardwood floors, so she was a little nervous when climbing and sliding off couches and beds.

However, we woke up to a beautiful cool day and decided to call this our first day of hiking.

Forest breaks are self-catering, however there is a restaurant (located in the Forest of Dean lodge building) where they serve breakfast/lunch/dinner and you can bring your own. Send a hot meal to the cabin!
