When the editors of the website Big 7 Travel announced their list of the world’s top 50 bucket list destinations, we stopped and started ticking the boxes.
The site surveyed its 1.5 million social audience to determine the top bucket list destinations around the world. According to Sarah Clayton-Lea, chief content officer at Big 7 Travel, this is the first time the site has compiled this list. “Bucket list travel was a trend that came up again and again in previous surveys when we asked our readers what type of travel content they like to consume most,” says Clayton-Lea. “So our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to find out what destinations people were dreaming of for 2019/2020.”

The results of the world’s top 50 destinations include some of the most beautiful places on earth. “White sandy beaches are still a must for many people, and vibrant cities are on many people’s bucket lists,” says Clayton-Lea. Countries with beautiful natural landscapes and world-famous monuments took first place: 22% of the destinations on the list have white sandy beaches, while 52% are iconic cities.

Big 7 Travel found in research that people are more likely to add a destination to their bucket list when they see it on social media, with 33% of people researching a holiday destination on their Instagram feed. With more than a third of our readers turning to Instagram for travel inspiration, it makes sense that cities with colorful neighborhoods (like Bo Kaap in Cape Town) would stand out,” says Clayton-Lea.
Balito topped the list of the world’s 50 most popular destinations, but there were some unexpected picks too. “The top 10 list includes many of the expected dream destinations, but there are also a few surprises on the list: Paro Valley in Bhutan or Virunga National Park in Congo, for example,” says Clayton-Lea. “I think this shows a huge appetite for the need to go off the grid, and we can only assume that social media (and Netflix in the case of Virunga!) is responsible for spreading the news about these amazing places.”
Something interesting the research revealed: Most people have an average bucket list of just 11 countries, with the hope of visiting seven of them in their lifetime.
