For a New York experience (during the summer), head to Coney Island to spend the day at the New York Aquarium, take a boat ride, get a hot dog and, if you play your cards right, even catch and fireworks. Needless to say, Luna Park is also one of the best children’s amusement parks in the city – and for those new, did we know it’s on the beach?
See below for our favorite things to do around Coney Island during the summer months. It tops our list of amazing summer day trips with kids. And never fear: when it rains, you can always hit some of our favorite local parks.
Children will want to be sent under the umbrella of this amazing sand for a high-class view of people in the sea. Expect three miles of beach and a boardwalk that runs the length of the beautiful day, but with plenty of adult guidance, the memories are worth braving the crowds. If you want more space to yourself, head to the eastern end of the peninsula to find a spot on the sand at Brighton or Manhattan Beach—both are on the calmer side. Luna Park at Coney Island offers a great time during the summer. There’s plenty to do for all ages—from “extreme thrills” to “mild thrills,” to less exciting rides (like the Beach Swing and Spinning Cup at the Tea Party), to fun but scary rides. rides like Lynn’s Trapeze and Coney. Island Hang Gliders and totally fun (screaming of course) rides like the Thunderbolt, Slingshot and the classic Coney Island Bikes. There are also many classic games on offer, from Whac A Mole to Water Racer. As an added bonus, at some summer locations, Luna Park also offers free credit for good scores.
There’s nothing like a stuffed dog and cold soda at Nathan’s after a day of fun in the sun. A cheese dog, a bag of sliced fries, cheese fries or a double beef cheeseburger or bacon cheeseburger to fill a grown-up belly. Kids can choose chicken, bone-in wings or a standard super cheeseburger. Don’t miss the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, held every July at the famous Nathan’s in Coney Island.
Get a closer look at the creatures that swim at NYC’s Aquarium. Curious children can see a re-creation of the Pacific Ocean on the beach and see different types of East River. Every day, there are sea lion shows at the Aquatheater (11am, 1pm and 3:30pm), as well as family viewing to feed the sea lions, otters, penguins, seals and walruses. Visit Glover’s Reef, a 150,000-gallon tank filled with 35 species of marine life from the coast of Belize, including jabfish and moray eels. Enter the 4-D theater to watch
Kokomo Events To Check Out This Weekend — The Kokomo Post
, (open daily, shows last about 15 minutes), and enjoy “Wonders of the Sea: Sharks!” which will open on June 30, 2018. Please note that a good portion of the aquarium is still under construction and undergoing repairs following damage from Hurricane Sandy.
Have you been to Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, but did you enjoy a ball game at this beautiful stadium, a stone’s throw from Coney Island Beach and the Boardwalk? Take the young sluggers of the Brooklyn Cyclones to play against other minor league teams through early September. Be sure to check in after the scheduled dates to make the bases as good as possible and catch the postgame fireworks display from their seats.
Luna Park isn’t the only place to get your thrills at Coney Island! Along with its winding beaches, this unique amusement park boasts kid-friendly rides like Spinning Daisy Dragons and Tilt-A-Whirl for parents and kids to enjoy together. Older kids can take it to their cars or be brave enough to visit Spook-A-Ram. Before you leave, be sure to take a ride on the 1920s Ferris Wheel to lift the kids 150 meters in the air for a spectacular view of the water.
