If there was a sleeper tourist state in New England, it would be New Hampshire! When I think of New Hampshire, I think of dozens and dozens of mountains.

Why Did 488 Golden Retrievers Gather In Scotland?

Home to the rugged White Mountains (in the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest), which make up nearly a quarter of the state and 160.9 miles of the Appalachian Trail, there’s no shortage of great hiking here!

There is so much hiking to do in NH that there are even TWO hiking lists; NH 48 (48 mountains above 4000 feet) and 52 WAV (52 with views!).

The White Mountains, the NH 48 list and the WAV 52 list have some overlap, but all have the best hiking in New England.

Our 6 Favorite Road Trips To Take With Dogs

I had to nominate this list of the best New England hikes with the king of them all! The highest mountain in New England at 6,288 feet, Mount Washington.

If you see the outline of this beauty from afar, you can show it. Mount Washington seems like a long way from many of the other hikers on this list, and being able to climb it and say you’ve climbed it is quite an accomplishment!

A popular and well-trodden route to this bad boy is the Tuckerman Canyon and Lion Head Trail. I wouldn’t advise doing this in the winter, but I think you might be new to hiking in New England and you weren’t meant to climb the toughest mountain in the toughest month! If so, be sure to do a lot of research because the summit of Mount Washington has the worst weather in the world and the highest wind speeds on record.

Check here for weather conditions for your trip. And if you want to consider it in the winter, check out my post on hiking Mount Washington in the winter!

New England Weekend Trip With Dogs

This hike deserves second place on this list of the best New England hikes. The famous Franconia bridge is probably the most popular (and most difficult) climb on our list.

It’s about 3.1 miles and about 2,900 feet of elevation gain to get to Haystack Mountain, but from there you’ll see amazing panoramic views down the Franconia Range for a mile.

This hike is more than an unforgettable ride that takes you to Haystack Mountain (the first 4,000 feet), the summit of Mount Lincoln (the second), and the last in the range will be Mount Lafayette (the third).

I did a sunrise tour over both the Noardsûker and the Midsûker. The view from Shagarloaf Medium is more expansive with almost 360 degree views, so if I had to choose one, it would be Medium.

Fortunately, you can cover both the north and the middle on the 3.3-mile Sugarloaf Trail, which has just over 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

The summit of Pierce Mountain via the Crawford Trail is a 5.9-mile hike with an elevation gain of approximately 2,400 feet.

I call the Crawford Mountain hike on the Davis Patt Trail a best kept secret because it doesn’t get the attention I think it deserves!

It’s not 4,000 feet, which puts it off the charts for those obsessed with this NH48 list, and it’s not easy!

But its views of Crawford Notch State Park and the valley below rival any at 4,000 feet! And it was good not to meet many people on the road.

There are so many great mountains and epic hikes in New Hampshire, but I wanted to include the second highest mountain in New England on this list.
