The road goes around the lake. The west side is rocky and the east side is easy to walk. But the good news is that there are stunning views from both sides with the Northern Bubble and the Southern Bubble in the background.

Built between 1913 and 1940, 55 miles of freight roads cut through the heart of Acadia. Their construction was financed and supervised by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., so he and others could enjoy the park on non-motorized roads. These roads were originally designed to accommodate horses and carriages, but are now popular with pedestrians and cyclists.

There is no road sign to mark this location. So check out the unique marina of Bracy Cove between Seal Harbor and North East Harbour.

Most visitors to Acadia never travel beyond Loop Road Park and the town of Bar Harbor. Although it’s a fun little town, it can feel crowded – especially if you’re walking your dog.

If you’re ready for a break from the crowds, head to Bass Harbor. Stop at Bass Harbor Head Light Station and enjoy seafood on Shore Road. The yard is pet friendly, the seafood is on the dock, and the view can’t be beat!

Most of Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. For a quieter experience, visit 5% of the park on the Shodek Peninsula near Winter Harbor – just 8 miles east of Mount Desert Island.

This peninsula is different from the desert mountain island in several ways – but mainly it is less crowded. Schodke Loop Road is also driveable year-round and is approximately 10.5 miles from the campground. Or cut the loop from Winter Harbor to Shodek Point and then Birch Harbor, extending the trip to 10 miles. Along the way, you will encounter many scenic and seaside stops.

From the Schodek Loop Road, you’ll find trails in the Schodek Trail System that range from easy to challenging. Bicyclists have over 8 miles of trails and pets are welcome.

Acadia is located near Bar Harbor, which is an all-beach town. This means that many local marinas and some shops close for the winter.

Bar Harbor’s high season falls between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If access to all the restaurants and shops is important to you, then you should plan your trip around this time. Summer temperatures are cool, usually in the 70s during the day.
