Living in Phoenix and raising a family in Southern California means we have a lot of trips to the area under our belts. We have family in several cities in Southern California and visit as often as we can. We love bringing dogs with us and even though we have a family, sometimes we need more space than they can provide or houses don’t work well for our dogs on long trips. Finding a suitable place for dogs can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some of our top tips for traveling to California with the whole family (dogs included). Where to stay, what to pack and what to do.

There are so many great options and I love that they have a 24/7 customer service team and local staff if you need them. Depending on your travel plans, you can choose a home based on your family’s (and your dog’s) needs. For example, love the wall space in this house.
My boys love Balboa Island and this beautiful home to share with their friends, family and dogs.

Chance and Kona are always ready to go to the dog beach. There are plenty of great hiking trails to take your dogs on, but only a few dog beaches. We love to walk or shop on any beach in the city. San Clemente has a long stretch of beautiful shops along Avenida del Mar, and if you keep walking, you’ll run into the beach.

However, dog beaches are another experience. When we’re in town with the dogs, we always see one. The two we visit the most are Rosie’s Dog Beach or Huntington Dog Beach in Long Beach. A little further south, Del Mar Beach has dog play areas.
If you’ve never been, I recommend bringing a long leash to play with until you know your dog won’t swim to Catalina Island. Be sure to bring fresh water and an extra towel to the car to remove as much sand as possible after playing.

We were on a mission to find the best dog beaches in Southern California, and to our surprise, our options were pretty limited. There are plenty of beaches, but we have pups running free in the water, so ant-free beaches are a must.
We’ve explored all of Southern California’s dog beaches and ranked them from our favorite to our least favorite.
Huntington Dog Beach is definitely our favorite beach in Southern California and if we lived close we would come here every week. The dog beach area is clearly marked and since we arrived before noon we had no problem finding parking.

A wonderful non-profit group runs this beach and does a wonderful job of keeping it “off the chain” so our pups can run and play freely.
We were staying at the Hilton Beach Front Resort in Santa Barbara and a friend recommended we check out Hendrix Beach. Crystal loved the view here.

This was the first beach we visited and the farthest from LAX. For some reason, this dog beach is always referred to as Southern California territory; However, Carmel is actually part of Northern California and is closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a dog paradise and was rated the #1 dog friendly city in America, so we decided to add it to our list.
Find The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In The Usa
We were staying at a dog-friendly hotel nearby, so we decided to walk to Carmel Beach as parking was very limited. The scenery here is beautiful and the powdery white sand felt good on our feet.
Kuma especially loved the sand here and was very excited when his little paws touched the sand. We think the white sand reminds him of Florida.
This was the busiest dog beach we visited. We arrived around 9am and were shocked to find the parking lot completely full with a line out of the lot.
Luckily we got a seat and had to be patient because it always seemed like someone was getting back in their car to leave.

Surfers, beach volleyball players, and dog owners frequent the beach here, so despite the large parking lot, it was full.
We loved how big the dog area was and that the water was shallow enough for our pups to go in and enjoy the waves. There is a large pile of rocks here, so if your dog likes to jump on rocks, this is a great place.
Zooey loves to jump and climb rocks, so she was very happy here! Kuma also had fun climbing the rocks, trying to knock Zoe down one by one, and chasing the other dogs.

When we first started Googling pet beaches in Los Angeles County, Rosie’s Dog Beach was always at the top of the search results. It is currently the only legal dog beach in Los Angeles County.
When we visited around 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning, there was ample parking and plenty of room for our pups to run around. For some reason, this beach didn’t excite the pups very much.
There was no problem, it was clean, but it looked a little shabby. The sand next to the water also felt like mud, and every time he stepped in and out of the water, the dog’s paws and feet looked very muddy.
Again, it wasn’t a bad dog beach, but it didn’t give us or the dogs as much excitement as the other beaches.
Best Glamping Near Me
