: Enter the Folsom Lake SRA at the Granite Bay entrance, then continue to the last parking lot to reach Beeks Bight. It’s a smaller lot, so be sure to get there early or check it out during the week when it’s less busy.

Previous Previous How to Share the Joy with Your Senior Dog Next Next Featured Location: California State Capitol Park Winter in the Bay Area can sometimes mean a lot of rain. Although it’s not our favorite weather, the only upside is chasing waterfalls while driving scenic routes. The last few years have been especially rainy, so we were able to compile a list of our favorite dog-friendly waterfalls in the Bay Area. Trails lead south to Morgan Hill and north to Mt. Tamalpais We love each of these hikes, but our favorites are the ones that go up.
Cataract Falls Trail is a 2.8 mile trail located near Stinson Beach, California. Considered a moderately difficult trail, it takes an average of 2 hours to complete, and I can confirm that this trail is a smooth trail with constant incline and lots of steps. It’s a hip hiking spot, so you’re likely to meet other people as you explore. The route is open all year round and is ideal for visiting at any time, especially in winter when there is heavy rainfall. Dogs are welcome and must be on a lead, but we did encounter some dogs off leash.
Parking: Free parking at the watershed with minimal spaces along the trail. come quick I recommend parking here to get up and start the hike.
Trash/Bathrooms: Mutual trash is available at the trailhead. A picnic area and restrooms are available at the end of the trail.
San Diego’s Best Dog Friendly Places, Restaurants, & Shops
Yuvas Canyon Park has a network of dog trails in Morgan Hill, California. The route is open all year round and is ideal for visiting at any time, especially in winter when there is heavy rainfall. We visited this place in February 2024 and couldn’t get over all the moss covered trees and the constant flow of water along the trail. You must have a reservation to visit the park 7 days a week. A day pass costs $6 and can be reserved online with an entry time.
We hiked the 1.5 mile Waterfall Loop, which is considered a moderately difficult trail, but I’d say it’s easy compared to Cataract Falls. There is a slight gradient, but it is more gradual. It’s a very popular spot for birdwatching and hiking, so you’re likely to encounter other people exploring and off-leash dogs.
We found Cascade Falls when Cataract Falls Road was closed in February 2024 and were pleasantly surprised. It was very muddy at the time, but the waterfall at the end was worth the easy hike and there are many vantage points.
You can do this hike in about 30 minutes and it is easy for families as it is fairly flat and short. The waterfall is best seen after rain in winter and early spring, but can also be seen at other times of the year. Parking can be tricky, so try to get there early or go mid-week.
Best Fenced Dog Parks In Melbourne For 2024
Dawn Falls is a 1.3 mile trail located near Larkspur, California. The route, which is considered moderately difficult, takes an average of 1 hour. I’d say it’s pretty easy to tilt at the end all the way to the drop. It’s a very popular spot for bird watching, hiking and running, so you’ll get to meet other people as you explore. The best time to visit this route is from January to November. We’ve done this hike several times and if your goal is to see the falls, definitely go in the winter/spring. If the year was weak, then there will be no waterfall in the autumn months. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
We like to make a day of our visit and go to Perry’s across the street for lunch after our hike.
The Cascade Falls Trail in Mill Valley, California is the easiest waterfall trail to combine with Dawn Falls, as they are 20 minutes apart. The trail is open year-round and is ideal for visiting at any time, especially after rain when there are many waterfalls along the trail. We visited it in March 2024. The main attraction of the falls is actually in the middle of the trail and surrounded by flowing redwoods, so if you want to make this walk really fast, you can.
Parking is difficult, so come early or on a weekday as there are few. several places marked at the beginning of the route.

Since I no longer have a dog sitter in Seattle, traveling without her for two weeks really wasn’t an option. Taking him along didn’t make the trip any easier, although I was surprised at how many dog-friendly activities we were able to find. We have had particularly good luck with dog walking in Redwood National and State Parks, surprisingly.
In Washington, where we live, dogs are almost always allowed in state parks and trails. However, in California, the state parks we visited do not allow dogs. Most national parks allow dogs in cars (paved roads, parking lots, picnic areas, etc.), and Redwood National and State Parks follow the same rules.
After leaving the Oregon Caverns and Cave Junction, we headed south for an hour on the aptly named Redwood Highway to Crescent City, California. The temperature started to rise as we headed south and soon it was sunny and warm enough to wear tank tops and shorts. This weather isn’t going to stop, so we should spend more time around CC instead of continuing south.
