With corner towers, ruins and an impressive entrance tower, this baronial pile looks like a castle. Inside, it’s an old English house with hardwood floors and red carpets, wide hallways with framed pictures and large windows. You won’t be bored here: as well as plenty of countryside activities, there are walking trails (dogs welcome at £25 a night), four acres of enclosed gardens, a golf course and nine greens, and a cookery school. The beautiful and indulgent spa offers a variety of thermal experiences with indoor and outdoor pools. The rooms, although in need of updating, are comfortable, with nice slouchy jeans, local books and very large bathrooms.

Although it is only 10 minutes from the beach and the bustle of Scarborough, the hotel is surrounded by countryside, fields, forests and its beautiful gardens. An original Victorian farmhouse, all ivy-covered goldstone windows and cream-painted windows, it has been sympathetically extended with front wings and two courtyards with beautiful water features.
