Our son, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019, and is a big part of why we love road trips. Simply put, jumping in the car is the easiest way to get him around (and we bring Lincoln everywhere we go).

So we revisited our travel list and added this road trip to Lincoln’s wish list. If you want the idea of walking the dog because you have a dog that wants to do all the things you do while walking, this is for you!
Lincoln takes you to New England on this tour because the summer and fall temperatures are great, outdoor activities abound, and here you’ll find one of the friendliest dog parks in the United States.

During the summer, enjoy the sunshine and cooler temperatures that you will find in many other places this time of year. Or take a fall trip to take advantage of the amazing foliage at one of the world’s best foliage viewing spots.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 trip, 2 weeks in VT in July, camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, 3 weeks near Lake Placid, NY in mid August . , one month in Campton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth. , ME in early October, and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
There is never a bad time to be in New England during these months. Sure, the summer months can get warm at night, but make sure your rental has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we Texans say it differently, so our tolerance for heat is higher than those living up north year-round. That said, we also don’t do without cold air, so feel that, our real tolerance, ha!)

However, we recommend that if you want to plan your trip during the beautiful autumn leaves, try to go in the second week of October. Although popular shooting locations will be busy (ie, Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the views will be worth it!
RTL Tip: Need more time to walk or spend time on the water during your trip? Start in July or August. Want a refreshing veggie ride with hot cider in hand? Join in October. Looking for cooler temperatures but fewer people? Join in September.
Lincoln really likes the trips we take because it means it’s easier for him to join us. If you are very close to anywhere on the road to drive, this is what we recommend. Drive to the nearest stop and turn around to go home.
However, if you can’t get here by car, and you have a dog that does well on planes, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car upon arrival. If you are flying, we recommend delaying the trip and driving from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

Lincoln (a town, not to be confused with our dog, which has the same name) caught fire in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. That’s what makes it a great place to start an eco-friendly road trip.

You could spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own because there are so many dog walks and things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and didn’t see everything on our list!)
But since we plan to one day enjoy the Holy Mountains on this trip, here are our top picks for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can drive the Kancamagus Highway from Portland to Lincoln. (So, every time you drive on your trip, come back to this section. If you don’t skip the trip, consider spending about two hours getting to and from Kancamagus Road while in Lincoln.)

New England Hills, Fairfield
Kancamagus Highway is 34 miles between Lincoln, NH, and Conway, NH. It is one of New Hampshire’s most popular drives and one of the best places in the United States to see fall foliage. While there are plenty of sights and attractions to keep you busy throughout your trip, we encourage you to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of this ride. (We’ve got an even better one coming!) Attention: Visiting in the fall? WAIT FORWARD. This route can be busy, so drive the night before or make sure to avoid long lines and heavy traffic at your destination. Kancamagus Highway is great, but it’s not your only day job!
Let’s take you and your child out of the car and into the forest! Hiking was our main activity during our month in New Hampshire. We visited every weekend and many nights. Being outdoors is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.

This 4.4-mile loop is a great half-day hike with mountain views. It’s easy on the dogs, great exercise, and fun if you’re walking the varied terrain between cobblestones and tree-lined paths.

Both Welch and Dickey Mountain. We recommend taking your time to hike the longest part of the trail. (Especially if it’s wet or you visit in the fall when the leaves are falling, this helps. Take your time, the ground can be slippery.)
