Best Summer Vacations In Us For Families – I recently read an article promoting Orlando’s theme parks as a great summer vacation destination and I had to laugh. I mean, how much does a trip to Universal Orlando cost? When I think of cheap vacations, I don’t think of a trip to Disney. So I started looking at cheap summer vacation spots that have opened up over the years, looking for real budget spots for a big family vacation.
As with my suggestions for affordable spring break destinations, costs can vary depending on where you are and the size and composition of your family. To level the playing field, I looked up the prices of these vacation rentals for a family of four, two adults and two children under 12, sharing a room.

I didn’t include transportation costs because most of them can make great trips depending on where you’re leaving from. I also based these costs on a trip of four to seven days, depending on the destination, knowing that families have limited vacation time and that each destination does not require a full week.

Also, since we’re looking for a summer vacation based on the idea that the average vacation costs about $8,000, I’ve tried to keep all of these ideas below. This includes accommodation, food and activities.

Day trips take you to Rockland, Camden and many other beautiful lighthouses. Summer is the best time to visit when the small town really shines, especially during the famous Windjammer Days in June. A series of historic windmills will sail into Boothbay Harbor for two days of fun with parades (both street and boat), rides and live entertainment complete with fireworks. Families can also enjoy field trips to the Maine Coastal Botanical Garden, Boothbay Railroad Village, and the Maine State Aquarium.
Where to stay: If you want to stay in town, the classic Tugboat Inn offers rooms from $300, kids stay free.

If you love mountains and lakes and enjoy fishing, hiking, boating and off-roading, head to northern New Hampshire. Things are still expensive around the touristy Lake District and the White Mountains, but if you continue across the Canadian border into the Great Northern Forest, you’ll find pristine countryside in Pittsburgh, New Hampshire.
Where to Stay: Overlooking First Connecticut Lake, family cabins at Lobstick Lodge start at $130 a night. This leaves plenty of room for a day hike on the 1,000 Mile Trail that is part of the Wilderness Tour. A four-seater Polaris RZR rents from Bear Rock Adventures for $599 per day.
There’s always something going on in Montreal during the summer, and that’s what makes it such a fun city to visit. Whether it’s a music festival, a food truck festival, or a Red Bull street race, Montreal loves its festivals. We love staying in Old Montreal which is within walking distance of the Old Port area. In the area, you can visit museums, ride a roller coaster, ride a ropes course, rent water bikes, visit a science center and ride a Ferris wheel.
To escape the crowds, you can walk along the canals or take a ride to the Par-Jean-Drapeau Metro. Hotels may be expensive, but the exchange rate here is good for Americans.

Where to stay: To save money, look for hotels like SpringHill Suites in Old Montreal that offer free Wi-Fi and breakfast.
The Finger Lakes are perfect and ideal for a family that loves the outdoors but doesn’t want to be off the grid. The region offers a great mix of outdoor activities and world-renowned wine tastings to delight parents and children alike. Lake sports include boating, fishing, boating, swimming and canoeing. Kids also enjoy eco-tours with Discover Cayuga Lake tours.
You can even arrange a water taxi to take you wine tasting! Beautiful state parks such as Stony Brook State Park or the famous Watkins Glen State Park are within easy reach. Nearby Corning is a charming town and home to a wonderful museum of glass (free for kids!) which will be busy all day showing crafts and hot glass.
Where to Stay: Lake house rentals and free or inexpensive activities abound, making this a convenient destination!

If you love beautiful beaches and family surfing, head to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The beaches of Southern Delaware are such gems with wide, soft sandy beaches and waves perfect for body surfing. You can also take a boat ride and try stand-up paddleboarding in the bay or take a dolphin watching or sunset cruise from nearby Lewes. This historic center of Lewes is also great for a seaside holiday.
Delaware has an incredibly strong beer and wine scene, and you can easily plan a day at nearby breweries, like the popular Dogfish Brewery. No matter what you do, you won’t be bored or broke.
Where to stay: Two-bedroom beach houses or condos start at about $250 a night. I made room in the budget for some fun treats and Kohr’s frozen custard!
Chincoteague, Virginia is the perfect summer destination for budget travelers looking for a comfortable beach vacation. The charming little town is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, known for its beautiful beaches, wild ponies and seafood.

Chincoteague has lots of fun things to do, including a visit to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 320 birds and the famous wild ponies. The refuge also has several tourist lodges, observation towers and swimming and sunbathing areas for visitors. Another convenient activity is to cycle through the city, which is full of shops, restaurants and art galleries.
You can also travel to Ocean City or Annapolis, Maryland and many other cities on the East Coast. If you don’t want to spend a week in Chincoteague, you can combine your visit with Virginia Beach (one of my East Coast road trip recommendations!).
Where should I stay? For travelers on a budget, Chincoteague offers a variety of affordable lodging options. A better option is the Best Western Chincoteague Island, with rooms starting at $300 a night in June. Located near the city center, the hotel offers guests free breakfast, free parking and a swimming pool.
Adventure and history collide in Harpers Harbor, West Virginia. Located in the middle of the Appalachian Trail, you will encounter many hikers and backpackers. In addition to the National Park, which serves the story of John Brown and the outbreak of the Civil War, the center offers great shopping and restaurants.
